A lot of people are saying 2009 was one amazing banner year in regards to money spent at the box office. This isn't the end-all, be-all list of movies I am looking forward to seeing this year as there's always going to be one surprise (see "District 9"), however just from looking at these previews, I do have an interest in them. Let's take a look.
"Inception" ( official website )
Leonardo DiCaprio is the headline player in this sci-fi crime drama, but there are so many other good names attached to this one. Ken Watanabe, Joseph-Gordon Levitt (who if you haven't seen him in "Brick," do yourself a favor and do it), Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Cillian Murphy, and Michael Caine. Oh and this is being directed by Christopher Nolan, who directed the movies, "Memento" and a couple little movies involving a guy named Batman.
"44 Inch Chest" ( official website )
If there's one thing that's always fun to see, it's a bunch of grizzled veterans put the hurt to anyone and everyone. Sometimes there's a reason that usually involves putting the shame to a bunch of young punks that refused to get off their lawn. Other times well, the grizzled vets just want to just kick ass. In this one, Ray Winstone just found out his wife cheated on him, and when you're Ray Winstone you turn to your friends to make you feel better. These friends include Tom Wilkinson, John Hurt and Ian McShane. Let the fun begin.
"Iron Man 2" ( official website )
I already made a post about how impressive the sequel looks and really, given how the first "Iron Man" movie went, I think we shouldn't have to worry about the second installment.
"Alice In Wonderland" ( official website )
Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter still creeps me out, but the way this movie looks, it's just impossible to pass it up. We all know the story, so my first impression is that this could be this year's "Avatar" in that you're not going for the story, but you're going for the visuals, the oh so pretty visuals.
"Salt" ( official website )
What often gets lost in the super-couple that is Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie is the fact that both actor and actress are really good at their craft. Look at their respective resumes and you'll only find a coupe bumps here and there. This summer, Jolie is a CIA operative accused of being a spy and she tears up New York City to clear her name? Well I'm sold.
"The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus" ( official website )
I don't need to tell you why this movie is worth watching. Anyone and everyone should know by now that this was the final movie Heath Ledger was working on before his death. He never finished it, so who stepped in to help Monty Python alumn Terry Gilliam (director of the vastly underrated "13 Monkeys") and finished it? Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell.
"Tron Legacy" ( official website )
What I said about "Alice In Wonderland" being one of those movies you watch just because it looks really pretty, well the same can be said about the much-anticipated sequel to the 1980s movie "Tron." I honestly don't remember much about the first movie and will most likely watch it before seeing the sequel, but from all accounts, the sequel looks really impressive.
"Shutter Island" ( official website )
I could've sworn this movie was going to be released in late 2009. Regardless of when it's coming out, we're talking about another Martin Scorcese picture here. He's had a pretty good relationship with Leonardo DiCaprio and "Shutter Island" looks to continue this actor/director tag team.
"Death At A Funeral" ( official website )
I saw a trailer for this when I saw "Up In The Air." Chris Rock has always been one of my favorite comedians. While his movies have never been called "must-see," the ensemble cast in this one looks pretty promising. Danny Glover as the crazy, old grandfather of the family, hell why not. Plus there's the bonus of a Peter Dinklage cameo.
There's some other movies I've seen trailers to that I'm on the fence about. I'll put those in another post. What movies are you looking forward to seeing in 2010?
